Group Project Introduction
SYS 214 - Principles of HCI
Agenda
- Divergent and Convergent thinking reprise
- Intro to group project
- Group formation
But first...
Last time on PHCI: Divergent Exercise
How might we travel from the classrom to the DC?
Remember:
- Quantity
- No judgment
- Wild ideas
- Build upon ideas of others
- Capture every idea
- Number the ideas
- Visuals are good
Converge
- Diverge on criteria that are important
- Converge on criteria
- Agree on a decision making process
- Evaluate (discussion)

Project Objective
Create and test a prototype that exhibits the HCI principles you learn in this class
Project Criteria
-
The project should address a target audience that your members have never developed for previously
-
Your aim should be to develop a device to solve a problem
-
Think about accessibility of the people in the context
- How hard will it be to engage the relevant stakeholders in gathering data and getting feedback on prototypes
Words of Wisdom
- Research, Research, Research!
- Don't be afraid to try something and have it fail! If you learn from it, you still succeed in learning!
- This project cannot be done well by waiting to the last minute
- You might feel like you don't know what you are doing — you probably won't know what you are doing. So that feeling seems normal.
- Talk to me, ask me, show me... anytime!
- Have Fun!
Oh...
Did I say "Research?"
Getting Started Today
Turn in by Saturday (tomorrow)!
Objectives:
- Form a design consulting "firm" with other class members
- 23 = 5 groups of three and 2 groups of four
- Practice the process of using divergent thinking, a key component in creative thinking and the design process
Getting Started Today
Turn in by Saturday (tomorrow)!
Tasks:
- Form a team
- Diverge on possible team names. Remember to defer judgment and capture all ideas. Each person should participate in the diverge.
- Converge on team names
Getting Started Today
Turn in by Saturday (tomorrow)!
Deliverables:
- Consulting group name and a picture of list of the diverge and converge
- Team member names
Next Step — Finding a Context
Due Sept 20
Start today if you have time!
Monday: more about context and research process
Method — Stakeholder Map
Goal: Identify stakeholders and their relationship to the project
- Can be speculative and then updated
- Identifies people by roles, "teacher", or by name, "John Doe".

People-Centered Design Process
Research:
- Collect: (What is the current situation?)
- People's needs
- People's desires
- People's challenges
- People's goals
- Processes
- Context
People-Centered Design Process
Research:
- Methods:
- Interviews
- Surveys
- Shadow
- Photography
- Observation
Why are we researching?
To understand "What is"
- Understand constraints of the problem
- Environment (context of use)
- Understand the people we are designing for/with
- See the problem/challenge through their eyes
- Goals of the stakeholders
