Even though English is the official language of Belize, most people speak Creole. Belizean Creole is the language that developed after generations of blending the British and African languages. Though Belizean Creole and English are similar, there are major differences. It took great concentration on our part to follow the gist of Creole conversations. Much was simply not understood. Many Creoles with limited exposure to English speaking have the same problem. That is why Ken and Sandy are there. They have helped to develop a written form of Creole and are beginning to translate the Bible into this language so that these people will have the opportunity to have a clearer understanding of the Word of God. With the assistance of three native Belizeans, they currently have nearly 1/8 of the New Testament translated.
